Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an empirically supported treatment for anxiety and mood related issues. It is an umbrella therapeutic modality under which many other treatments fall (e.g. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), Behavioral Activation).
CBT is currently seen as the gold-standard treatment modality for a large number of disorders, including anxiety, OCD, and depression.
-
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an effective type of therapy that was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help people manage intense emotions and the behaviors that go along with them, such as suicidal and self-harming behaviors.
Several members of our clinical team are DBT certified and offer comprehensive DBT treatment to teens and adults. We additionally host several DBT groups for different age ranges.

Exposure and response prevention is seen as the active ingredient in CBT for treating anxiety disorders. Exposure-based treatments for anxiety focus on reducing cycles of avoidance and/or compulsive behavior by helping clients become gradually exposed to their fears. ERP is the primary treatment for disorders such as OCD, social anxiety, and phobias.

Some therapists provides evidence-based coaching for parents of children ages 3+ exhibiting emotional outbursts, refusal to follow rules, difficulty with transitions, and aggressive or destructive behaviors. Parents are presented with strategies for improving the parent-child relationship, increasing positive behaviors, and responding to non-compliant or oppositional behaviors with consistency and confidence. Therapists similarly collaborate with parents of teenagers displaying hostility, defiance, emotional volatility or apathy, to reduce parental burnout and increase parents’ sense of efficacy.

Prolonged exposure is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that teaches individuals to gradually approach trauma-related memories, feelings and situations. Prolonged exposure is done in the context of individual therapy, and may also be integrated into Dialectical Behavior Therapy for individuals who experience suicidal thoughts or engage in self-injurious behavior through DBT-PE.
For younger children with histories of trauma, therapists implement Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy. TF-CBT aims to give children the skills they need to identify and manage distressing thoughts. Like Prolonged Exposure, TF-CBT incorporates gradual and age-appropriate narration of the trauma as well as a gradual approach to safe trauma cues currently being avoided. This evidence-based and effective treatment for trauma related symptoms may incorporate caregivers in treatment.
